Note:

Number of Miners excludes mines producing less than 10,000 short tons and preparation plants with less than 5,000 employee hours, which are not required to provide this data.

  • Productivity (short tons per miner hour) is calculated by dividing the total coal production by the total direct labor hours worked by all mine employees engaged in production, preparation, processing, development, maintenance, repair, and shop or yard work at mining operations. Calculation excludes mines producing less than 10,000 short tons and preparation plants with less than 5,000 employee hours, which are not required to provide this data.
  • "Other": Indicates mines that produce coal using shortwall, scoop loading, hand loading, or other mining methods or a 50/50 percent continuous/ conventional split in mining method.
  • "Balancing item": Complete data regarding mining method employed at mines producing less than 10,000 short tons per annum is not available from EIA publications, 1990 to 1992. Balancing item calculated by VCCER.
  • Continuous production at underground mines indicates data for mines that produce greater than 50 percent of coal by continuous mining method.
  • Conventional production at underground mines indicates data for mines that produce greater than 50 percent of coal by conventional mining method.
  • Longwall production at underground mines indicates data for mines that have any production from longwall mining method. A typical longwall mining operation uses 80 percent longwall mining and 20 percent continuous mining.
  • Production figures exclude silt, culm, refuse, bank, slurry dam, and dredge operations.
  • Totals may not equal sum of components due to independent rounding.
